What is an MTR Test?

MTR test stands for material test report. This test analyzes the chemical and mechanical attributes of a material to ensure quality. You’ll get multiple critical values from the test, like a heat number, or batch number.

The batch number is also called a melt number. Companies often use the heat number to quickly find a material when needed. In fact, the number is engraved onto a plate or piece of the material.

For simplicity, the number engraved on the material must match the number in the Material Test Report. In addition, MTRs must include specific information. For example, the name of the manufacture that the material came from, size of the material, its weight, etc. must all be documented.

Further, there are multiple other results that must be documented. That’s why having a formal MTR is so critical. With so many values, companies need to be able to view them quickly and easily.

Destructive Testing

When creating a Material Test Report, there are several kinds of tests that material will go through. One of them is Destructive Testing. This particular test puts that material under high impact and duress.

Raw material has to go through vigorous testing before it can even be considered being used. Tests like Destructive Testing help determine if the raw material is safe to use. All results must be documented accurately in the MTR.
